How To Train For A Photography Career

There are actually a lot of photography careers for people that are willing to dedicate themselves to this art. There is plenty of steady work for photographers. Even someone with only a little photography training can work taking school pictures, for example. Someone who knows more about setting up scenes can work in newspapers, movies, or even as an artist.

While At School

Many photographers first discover a love for this art while they are still young. These kind of people join the school newspaper or yearbook and start learning the basics of lighting, composition, and film developing. Then there is the satisfaction of seeing photos in print – even if they are still the work of a young amateur. This is, of course, not necessary for an eventual photography career, but it is how many photographers start out.

Going To College

University training is probably the easiest path to a photography career. Students majoring in photography, film, art, or related areas have the leisure to take many classes, explore techniques, and use university darkrooms and cameras for free. There is also access to photography professionals: professors and photographers who teach and give time at the university.

While at university, diligent students can even try out a photography career in the form of an internship. Newspapers, art galleries, film studios, archives, and other establishments need photographers and often provide interns with a great opportunity to meet professionals and test out the working world.

Learning On The Job

It would be rare to find a company that would hire a person and teach him or her photography from the basics. If studying photography at college is not an option, budding photographers must at least be ardent hobbyists.

Community colleges and private photographers frequently offer lessons and classes to the public. Some of these classes can actually be quite detailed. There students learn about cameras, lighting, composition, and film developing – but the training is not as rigorous as at college and there is rarely access to good darkrooms and equipment.

Those aiming for a photography career should be behind the camera as much as possible, whether they went to college for it or not. Building a portfolio is the only way for a person to get hired as a full-time photographer. Photo contests, online forums, and hobby groups are a great way to get feedback about pictures and see what other people are doing.
